A late-race pile-up has cost Shane van Gisbergen a strong result in today’s Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway.
The three-time race winner had finished Stage 2 in 21st and was working his way forward over the closing stages before he was caught out in the multi-car incident on Lap 96.
He had begun the lap in 16th.
Jeffrey Earnhardt was the first to spin, coming down low and across the nose of Caesar Bacarella while trying to avoid Anthony Alfredo, who got loose in Turn 3.
Earnhardt, Alfredo, Bacarella, van Gisbergen, Jeremy Clements and Josh Bilicki were among those involved as the trailing field followed through.
Van Gisbergen returned to the pit lane for repairs before a red flag was thrown, losing a lap on the field ahead of overtime.
He went on to finish 25th.
Ryan Truex won the race ahead of Chandler Smith and Parker Kligerman in a dramatic overtime finish. The caution flag flew, ending the race when AJ Allmendinger was spun.
Van Gisbergen returns to the track at Daytona International Speedway tomorrow with his NASCAR Cup race, which starts at 11.30 am NZST.
He will line up in 32nd.
