Only a superb flying lap from Cam Waters could stop Kiwi rookie Matt Payne from claiming his maiden Supercars pole position at the Gold Coast 500, with the Tickford driver the only one to go under the 1min 11sec to qualify first in the Top 10 Shootout.
Having qualified on the provisional pole in the earlier timed session, Waters was the last to run and set a 1:10.9501 for the top spot.
Payne, who had provisionally qualified second, will start from the same position, with the Penrite Racing driver topping Shane van Gisbergen by one-tenth of a second to move into the provisional pole with only Waters left to run.
Van Gisbergen will start this evening’s race from third, gaining an additional two positions from the earlier timed run. The result puts pressure on championship leader Brodie Kostecki, who was the sole competitor to suffer a kerb strike, relegating him from third to tenth.
Thomas Randle will start next to van Gisbergen on the second row, ahead of David Reynolds and Chaz Mostert in an all-Mustang row three.
Andre Heimgartner also moved forward, jumping from tenth to eighth as the first runner, leapfrogging Tim Slade, who will start ninth, and Kostecki.
Scott Pye starts next to Heimgartner from seventh.
The opening race of the Gold Coast 500 begins at 6.45 pm and will be shown live on Sky Sport.
