Red Bull has released Season 3 of its ‘Mind Set Win’ podcast, which features host Lisa Ramuschkat interviewing Red Bull’s Formula 1 reserve driver, Liam Lawson.
Lawson speaks honestly of the pride and pressures of representing his home country in Formula 1, a rare feat that only 10 drivers can claim in the sport’s history.
Off the back of strong Formula 3, Formula 2 and Super Formula drives, the Kiwi fulfilled his dream of starting an F1 race at the Dutch Grand Prix last year, impressing across five races and scoring his first points in the Singapore Grand Prix.
Lawson talks about his future ambitions, his role as a reserve driver, his fascination with F1 and his debut in the Netherlands, in addition to how the support from home has enabled him to compete amongst the best.
“It was realising that Formula One is the highest level, and that if I wanted to be the best, I would need to be a Formula One driver and I would need to win in Formula One. I think that’s why the attraction came towards Formula One,” he said.
“We’re not here just to race in Formula One. [We’re] obviously here to win and to be the best,” he later adds. “It’s always been something that I’ve wanted to be the best at. So, I guess that’s why it’s not just about competing in Formula One, but it’s about winning.”
He says of his last-minute call-up to compete at Zandvoort, “No matter how ready for a championship you feel when you’re jumping in mid-season, you’re going into a sort of really crazy situation like that, you can only feel so ready.”
“I knew that I really didn’t have much time, so obviously you know, I’m realistic about things, and I knew it was going to be very, very tough.”
