Three-time Supercars champions Shane van Gisbergen has made it clear that his future in the series hangs in the balance of the new Gen3 cars which come into play in 2023.
Earlier this year, he revealed talks of a new “deal” of which will be decided upon depending on how next year goes.
Van Gisbergen has already been confirmed to race with Triple Eight for next season in which he will defend his now third title and gun for a fourth.
“We’ve had pretty good chats about extending,” van Gisbergen said speaking to Supercars.
“I want to wait and race the car. There’s so much talk about what’s going to happen and how it’s going to be.
“I want it to be awesome, I want the racing to be great… I’ll just be patient with it.”
The Kiwi is no stranger to other disciplines of motorsport with his exploits being put to good use in both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the World Rally Championship earlier this year.
Considering how versatile he is as a driver, talks of a future deal shouldn’t come as a surprise to us all.
Most recently, Triple Eight team principal Jamie Whincup stated he isn’t concerned about the Kiwi’s future with Triple Eight.
“Shane’s got a gig at Triple Eight for as long as he needs or wants to,” Whincup said speaking to Supercars.
“We don’t employ or contract anyone who doesn’t want to be here.”
The former racer and seven-time champion himself has confidence in the new machinery and rightly so considering the Red Bull Ampol Racing outfit co-developed the Chevrolet Camaro Gen3 Supercar with General Motors.
“We’re giving him the opportunity to experience Gen3 to decide which way we’re gonna go,” he added.
“Triple Eight has designed the car from the ground up — we’re confident it’s gonna be a good thing.”
The Camaro’s rival for next year will be the likes of the Ford Mustang which is sure to provide some close racing while continuing an age old battle between the marques.
Van Gisbergen said he wants to stay in Supercars full-time and if all goes well with the new Gen3 cars, remain with Triple Eight.
The 2023 Supercars Championship kicks off in Newcastle in March next year.
