New Zealand’s Shane van Gisbergen will have his work cut out for him in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway after qualifying 33rd. The Trackhouse Racing driver found himself mired deep in the pack, while teammates Ross Chastain and Daniel Suárez didn’t fare much better, lining up 17th and 26th, respectively.
Christopher Bell was the top qualifier with a time of 19.718. Van Gisbergen was just under four-tenths behind him on a 20.090 lap time.

Despite the setback, SVG remains optimistic about the race, which goes green at 8 a.m. NZ time. The tight qualifying margins at the paperclip-shaped short track mean that while Trackhouse’s struggles are evident, the battle for positions is incredibly fierce.
Thirty-six out of the 38-car field was separated by just 0.5 seconds, underscoring the razor-thin differences between front-runners and backmarkers.
Van Gisbergen has shown glimpses of brilliance on ovals but is still looking to make a real breakthrough. His previous best finish at Martinsville leaves room for improvement, and his goal is to crack the top 11, which would mark his best oval result yet, which is 12th at Martinsville.
With Martinsville’s chaotic nature and the potential for high attrition, the Kiwi star will aim to make steady progress through the field and capitalize on any late-race opportunities.
Trackhouse Racing’s struggles in qualifying remain a talking point, with the team consistently starting in the bottom half of the grid. While their race pace has often been stronger, starting so far back makes life difficult at a track where overtaking is notoriously tough.
Can van Gisbergen and Trackhouse turn their fortunes around under the lights at Martinsville? Kiwi fans will be watching closely, hoping their star driver can fight his way forward and prove he belongs among the Cup Series elite.
