Fresh off a podium in the previous round at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Shane van Gisbergen has returned to action to qualify 25th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Van Gisbergen was 34th of 38 to run in qualifying, taking to the track immediately after Jesse Love, who qualified on pole for the previous two rounds but failed to make the top ten at Las Vegas.
He would improve on his practice time to set a 31.053, with an average speed of 173.896mph (279.858 kph) to fall into 21st.
Several trailing drivers went on to better this, relegating van Gisbergen to 25th.
Cole Custer led the way and starts Sunday’s race on pole, with a best lap of 29.788 seconds, two-hundredths faster than Chandler Smith.
Van Gisbergen’s Kaulig Racing teammate AJ Allmendinger starts from third, next to Parker Retzlaff.
Austin Hill, who has won both of this season’s races, starts fifth.
The Kiwi Kaulig Racing driver, sporting a new blue livery from sponsor Focused Health, earlier completed 12 laps in the earlier practice session to set a best lap of 32.095 for 33rd.
The NASCAR Xfinity Series Spring Race at Las Vegas, competed on the famed 1.5-mile tri-oval, begins at 11.00 am on Sunday (NZ time) and will be shown live on ThreeNow.
