Shane van Gisbergen will start in the midfield for this weekend’s Xfinity Series race at Michigan International Speedway, having qualified 23rd.
The three-time Xfinity Series race winner completed a 42.672-second flyer on the 2-mile (3.2 km) D-shaped oval, 0.725 seconds off the pole-setting time.
He will start alongside Kaulig Racing teammate Daniel Dye for Sunday’s race.
Sheldon Creed will start from the front following his 41.947-second effort, which pipped Riley Herbst by one-tenth.
Taylor Gray, Cole Custer, and Chandler Smith make up the top five, ahead of Brandon Jones, Ryan Sieg, Carson Kvapil, Jesse Love, and John Hunter Nemechek.
AJ Allmendinger qualified as the fastest Kaulig Racing driver in 13th. Van Gisbergen is the second-best of the team’s four-strong lineup, ahead of Dye and Josh Williams, who qualified 29th.
Nemechek topped the earlier practice session, pipping Chandler Smith by 0.005 seconds.
Van Gisbergen completed 11 laps in practice, with a best effort of 42.256 seconds, the 28th-fastest time.
Tomorrow’s Xfinity Series race at Michigan International Speedway begins at 7.30 am NZST and will be shown live on Three Now.
