Shane van Gisbergen is now one place closer to achieving a new podium record following the weekend’s Supercars round in Melbourne, surpassing that of Craig Lowndes’ overall number of top three finishes.
The three-time title holder scored three podiums in the second round, one first and two second positions, while also coming fourth.
Adding those three onto his overall tally brings van Gisbergen to a total of 170 podiums in his entire career, one more than Lowndes’.
That means the Kiwi now has the second most podiums of any driver in Supercars with the only person ahead of him being former teammate Jamie Whincup with 237.
Interestingly, Supercars only begun to recognise podiums as the top three finishers in each race from 2009. Between 1960 and 2008, it was the top three finishers of the overall round who were classed as podium finishers, not for individual races.
Van Gisbergen scored his first podium in 2010 at the Abu Dhabi season-opener. He then went on to achieve his first race victory in Hamilton in 2011.
As it stands, SVG will have to keep up his championship winning form in order to surpass the likes of Whincup for the driver with the most podiums in Supercars over the next few seasons.
