Following Shane van Gisbergen’s victory at the Bathurst 1000 earlier this month, there’s a high chance the Kiwi could secure the 2022 Supercars Championship title at this weekend’s Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.
Just two events remain with the Kiwi driver already breaking fellow countryman Scott McLaughlin’s 18 race win record in a single season.
That gives van Gisbergen a total of 3082 points with the only other driver in contention being Cam Waters.
Waters currently sits 567 points behind his Red Bull Ampol Racing rival with just 600 points left to play for.
That means van Gisbergen needs just 33 points to earn his third Supercars title this weekend.
Even if Waters wins the first race on Saturday, van Gisbergen only needs to finish 24th to take home the championship.
Red Bull Ampol Racing could also secure its 11th teams’ championship this weekend as it currently leads Shell V-Power Racing Team by 671 points.
The Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 gets underway on Friday 28 October and runs until Sunday 30 October.
