Shane van Gisbergen will start from pole position for today’s Xfinity Series race at Sonoma Raceway.
The Kiwi’s blistering 1:14.677 flyer in the final round of qualifying was over three-tenths faster than second-placed Ty Gibbs.
The two-round qualifying format for the Road Course outing saw the field split into two groups, with the top five from each progressing to the final session to battle for the pole.
Kaulig Racing elected to sit van Gisbergen and his teammate Josh Williams in the pit lane for the opening stages of Group A qualifying.
Once on track, van Gisbergen set a 1:14.804 on his second lap to top the group from Ty Gibbs, Austin Hill, John Hunter-Nemechek and Jesse Love.
Sheldon Creed, Justin Allgaier, AJ Allmendinger, Sam Mayer and Sammy Smith progressed from Group B.
Van Gisbergen’s 1:14.677 pole-setting time came during the first runs of Round 2, and no one could better this over the session.
The #97 driver was the only one to go under the 1:15 barrier across the entire qualifying session, and he did so twice.
Gibbs will start on the front row next to the Kiwi, with Hill and Allmendinger locking out the second row.
Allgaier and Love complete Row 3 ahead of Nemechek, Mayer, Creed and Smith.
The 79-lap Xfinity Series race begins at midday NZST and will be shown live on ThreeNow.
