Shane van Gisbergen has been left with work to do after qualifying 29th for Sunday morning’s Xfinity Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Full-time NASCAR Cup Series drivers Ty Gibbs and Kyle Busch lock out the front row, with the former’s 30.598-second effort over one-tenth quicker than his closest rival.
Chandler Smith leads the full-time Xfinity Series drivers from third and starts next to Jesse Love on the second row.
Van Gisbergen’s 31.782-second effort puts him deep in the field in 29th, alongside 2020 Cup Series Champion Chase Elliott.
AJ Allmendinger was the fastest Kaulig Racing driver in 11th, while Josh Williams will start from 36th.
In the earlier practice session, van Gisbergen completed 26 laps of the 1.5-mile quad-oval intermediate speedway with his best lap of 32.274 seconds, placing him 36th.
Sunday’s Xfinity Series race begins at 5.00 am NZST. The three-time Supercars Champion will then switch his focus to Cup Series qualifying at 9.50 am.
The NASCAR Cup Coca-Cola 600 goes green at 10.00 am on Monday.
