Shane van Gisbergen will start Monday morning’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega from 17th.
The Kiwi set a 53.226-second flyer to fall just 0.056 seconds short of a top-ten position, which would have put him into Round 2 of qualifying.
NASCAR star Kyle Larson was unable to participate in qualifying after his Hendrick Motorsport outfit made unapproved adjustments to his roof rails while it was pushed to the grid.
Michael McDowell stormed to the pole in Round 2, setting a 52.609-second fast lap nearly one-tenth quicker than second-placed Austin Cindric.
Todd Gilliland will start from third, ahead of Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon, Martin Truex Jr., Joey Logano and Chris Buescher.
Van Gisbergen qualified as the best of the Kaulig Racing team, with teammate Daniel Hemric set to line up 19th.
The Kiwi is currently in action in the Xfinity Series at the same venue and finished in the points after Stage 1.
Monday’s NASCAR Cup Series race begins at 7.00 am and will be shown live on ThreeNow.
