Shane van Gisbergen recovered from a tough qualifying session to finish 18th at Dover Motor Speedway in a race disrupted by fire and wet weather.
Ryan Truex won a thrilling finale that went into double overtime, with the victory just his second in the Xfinity Series following his maiden success at the same venue last year.
Carson Kvapil finished as runner-up in his second Xfinity Series start, while Sam Mayer, Sheldon Creed and Cole Custer completed the top five.
Van Gisbergen started from 31st and ran in the mid-field when a Lap 5 caution was called for an incident between JJ Yelley and Hailie Deegan.
He remained in the pack at the second yellow on Lap 26 when Ryan Sieg’s #39 RSS Racing Ford caught fire. He escaped unhurt but was forced from the race.
Justin Allgaier went on to win Stage 1 from Brandon Jones and Cole Custer, with van Gisbergen 24th, having boxed under the earlier caution.
Blaine Perkins, also of RSS Racing, was the next to retire as an electrical fire took hold in his #29 Ford.
Van Gisbergen took the restart in fifth but dropped out of the top ten over the following laps before continuing to tumble down the order.
Custer won Stage 2 from Austin Hill, Jesse Love, and Parker Retzlaff. The Kiwi took the green and white chequered in 19th before climbing two places under the end-of-stage caution.
Van Gisbergen dropped back off the Lap 99 restart and was the last car on the lead lap shortly after, in 26th. With Allgaier in pursuit, Custer continued to build on his advantage at the front.
The #97 went a lap down on Lap 148 but recovered it as the race entered the second overtime period.
Before that, the rain brought the race under caution, and a 15-minute red flag was called shortly after as conditions quickly improved.
Taylor Gray’s Lap 184 crash brought the next interruption after the rain had cleared, with van Gisbergen taking the restart on the 12th row but a lap behind.
Riley Herbst spun from contact with Allgaier on Lap 194, which sent the race to overtime, with van Gisbergen 20th but still a lap down.
He got that back shortly after double overtime was called due to a spin for Hill, which occurred shortly after racing resumed.
Truex took the lead through Turn 3 on the penultimate lap and would hold the position for the win as another caution was called on the final lap for an incident further back.
The Xfinity Series returns on Saturday, May 11, with a trip to Darlington Raceway in South Carolina.
