Supercars has announced a wholesale change to its Gen3 testing program in a major back-flip, moving from a structured plan to a flexible approach. The decision came after teams voted for changes in light of ongoing controlled component supply issues with building the new Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro race cars.
The previously scheduled shakedown and test dates have been cancelled, and teams can now test independently and at a time of their choosing. This will allow teams to test individual cars rather than testing as a team. The previous 60km mileage limit for each car’s shakedown has also been removed, with unlimited mileage now permitted.
The all-in test at Sydney Motorsport Park on February 22 remains in place. Supercars CEO Shane Howard said in a statement that the new testing schedule would ensure that each driver and car can get the necessary track time before the first event of the Gen3 era on March 10-12.
