Shane Van Gisbergen has taken the win in the second race at Sydney Motorsport Park after a battle with Will Davison.
After a relatively calm race yesterday today’s first race got off to a wild start, with pole-sitter Anton de Pasquale dropping to seventh after struggling to get his Shell-V-Power Mustang off the line.
Davison lead the early part of the race with van Gisbergen moving up four spots from the start to run behind him.
While leading by almost three seconds Davison had an electrical issue that left him without any dash information or shift lights, forcing the team to shut the car off and restart it during their pit stop, getting the shift lights and some information back.
However, the issue meant that Davison couldn’t turn on the pit speed limiter as he normally would, with ‘SVG’ pitting at the same time, he closed the three-second gap, while Davison had to estimate the pit speed.
After the pit stop, Davison wasn’t able to get back past SVG.
“We had a bit of luck obviously with whatever dramas they had but a perfect pitstop for Red Bull Ampol Racing boys,” van Gisbergen said.
“We got out in front had to make some passes, again had a pretty fun first lap racing with the guys and that set the race up.”
After a long battle for third between de Pasquale who was struggling with older tyres, and Brodie Kostecki, Kostecki locked a brake, allowing Nick Percat who had closed in on the pair while they battled, through.
Percat was quickly able to get past de Pasquale to move into third where he would finish the race, with Kostecki in fourth, and de Pasquale in fifth.
Tim Slade had a strong race gaining four spots to finish in sixth, with Whincup in seventh.
Chaz Mostert finished in eighth just ahead of Andre Heimgartner, with teammate David Reynolds rounding out the top ten.
