Scott McLaughlin, the 2024 Indy 500 pole sitter, has announced a contract extension with Team Penske, securing his future with the IndyCar team.
McLaughlin initially joined Penske in late 2016, while competing in the Supercars Championship. He achieved three Supercars titles (2018, 2019, 2020) and a Bathurst 1000 victory (2019) with the team before transitioning full-time to IndyCar in 2021. Since then, he’s amassed an impressive record: 19 podium finishes, nine pole positions, and seven wins, culminating in third-place championship finishes in both 2023 and 2024.
McLaughlin revealed the news on X overnight, on the eve of the 2025 IndyCar season. “We’re LIVE and ready for a big 2025!” he posted. “Signed a long-term extension with Team Penske and have been 100% focused on prep for this year. Let’s kick this season off right! STRAIGHT. TO. THE. MOON.”
Speaking to reporters later, McLaughlin confirmed the offseason signing, emphasizing his desire for stability, particularly as a new father. “I just wanted to remove any questions, move forward, and get on with it,” he explained. “I love the team, and it was great to get some security. I’m applying for US citizenship and hope to be here for a long time. It was an easy decision; we all share the same goals.”
When asked about a possible NASCAR foray with Penske, McLaughlin responded, “I’ve spoken to RP (Roger Penske) about it, and he’s joked about me racing Shane van Gisbergen again, but it’s all fun stuff for now. If I keep delivering results here, maybe that opportunity will arise one day.”
McLaughlin’s 2025 IndyCar campaign begins this weekend in St. Petersburg—the same track where he secured his first IndyCar win in 2022.
