Three-time Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin is looking forward to seeing Liam Lawson’s career progress, as the 19-year old pursues a drive in Formula 1.
Lawson competed in the 2021 season of DTM and Formula 2, taking a runner up finish in the DTM championship.
The Kiwi also recently completed a young drivers test day for Formula 1 team AlphaTauri at Abu Dhabi.
McLaughlin left Supercars at the end of the 2020 season to pursue open-wheel racing, competing in IndyCar for Team Penske.
The IndyCar driver was recently asked if he would like to see Lawson competing in Indycar.
“Yeah, I don’t know. He’s on a pretty good trajectory to Formula 1. He’s probably New Zealand’s next hopeful to be in the Formula 1 seat,” McLaughlin said.
“I certainly hope he tries very hard to get all the way there. Yeah, there’s always — regardless of where he wants to go, obviously his goals are Formula 1 at this point.
“I certainly wish him all the best. He’s a great little driver, someone that New Zealand is very proud of.
“Me and Scotty [Dixon] will look after things over here. If he wants to come to Indy one day and have a challenge, we’ll welcome him with open arms I’m sure.”
Lawson will return for a second season in Formula 2 this year with Carlin when the season gets underway at Sakhir, March 18-20.
