Supercar series veteran David Reynolds has put together a stunning lap to take pole position for this evening’s Race 31 on the Gold Coast. Reynolds, who had qualified sixth fastest for the shootout, took top spot by a massive .0403 of a second over the series leader Shane van Gisbergen.
The result came as a surprise for many, Reynolds included, who recognised his speed was incredible.
“That’s probably one of the best laps I’ve done in my life. Don’t ask me to repeat that,” he said following the session.
Starting the shootout as the last runner due to topping qualifying, a difficult first sector immediately put van Gisbergen on the back-foot. He did, however, recover in sectors two and three to ensure he is on the front row.
Cam Waters made a big jump up the order from ninth, to start third in the main event.
He’ll have championship rival for Chaz Mostert for company on the second row, the duo likely to challenge those ahead from the start.
As has been the trend this weekend, a number of drivers struggled with track limits and had their times invalidated.
This includes New Zealander Andre Heimgartner as well as Will Davison and Brodie Kostecki.
Racing gets underway at 6.45pm this evening and is shown live on Sky Sport 5.
