Sergio Perez is set to remain in his seat at Red Bull Racing for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Team management met on Monday to discuss the Mexican’s future in the team amid speculation he was to be dropped mid-season.
Team Principal Christian Horner spoke to the Red Bull outfit after the meeting, saying, “Checo remains a Red Bull Racing driver despite recent speculation, and we look forward to seeing him perform at tracks he has previously excelled at after the summer break.”
It is also understood that RB’s lineup of Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo will remain the same until the end of 2024 at the earliest.
Speaking after a disappointing Belgian Grand Prix, where he dropped from a front-row start to finish seventh, Perez said, “I think we have too much going on in the team and a lot of things that we have to focus on, and we cannot waste any energy with all this speculation.
“This is the last time I will speak about the future, so just to make it clear for everyone, I will not be speaking anymore. I will not answer any more questions about the future.”
While Red Bull has confirmed Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez for the 2025 Formula 1 season, the latter’s form since the Canadian Grand Prix has led to speculation that his contract extension may be voided.
Widely circulated media reports have indicated a clause in his contract allowing Red Bull to drop him or demote him to RB mid-season if he was more than 100 points behind Verstappen.
Following the Belgian Grand Prix, Perez is 146 points behind Verstappen. McLaren also moved to within 42 points of Red Bull in the Constructor’s Championship after Perez’s tumble down the order, which team advisor Helmut Marko described as a complete collapse.
Liam Lawson, Ricciardo, and Tsunoda will still be in action in a filming session at Imola this week. The session had been touted as a shootout between the Kiwi and the Australian for Perez’s Formula 1 seat.
Speaking after the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, Horner insisted the test was simply a filming day and was “all about content.”
He also clarified Lawson and Ricciardo will be driving a 2024 RB car, not the 2022 AlphaTauri as initially reported.
