New Zealand driver Nick Cassidy has made it two wins in two weekends after a lights-to-flag victory at the Red Bull Ring in Austria this morning.
Having qualified second fastest for the event, the 28-year-old was elevated to pole after fastest qualifier Rene Rast was relegated for an infringement at Spa-Francorchamps last time out.
Starting at the front, Cassidy led into Turn 1 with a compact field behind. The battle pack behind, sometimes seeing cars four-wide, allowed the lead to quickly extend to over one second, Rast quickly moving up from fourth to sit second in the early proceedings.
The tight battles throughout the field continued to be of assistance to the Red Bull AlphaTauri AF Corse Ferrari, some minor incidents and spins seeing the lead fluctuate between one and three seconds.
The majority of the field made their compulsory stops before the halfway point, Cassidy one of just seven drivers electing to stay out late before coming in with 16 minutes remaining.
Rast, having stopped two laps earlier, failed to make the undercut work, the Kiwi re-emerging from the lane with his lead in tact.
Over the concluding stages the lead grew slightly, Cassidy finishing 2.5 seconds ahead of Rast with Mirko Bortolltti finishing third a further three seconds up the road.
The win sees Cassidy as just the second driver to claim more than one win this season, after championship leader Sheldon van der Linde, after 13 races.
He now sits just outside the championship top 10 despite missing races earlier in the year due to Formula E commitments.
The DTM will be back in action again tomorrow for the second of two races, qualifying beginning at 8.55pm on Sky Sport Popup 1 (600) before the the race at 12.15am Monday morning on Sky Sport 5 (055).
