Richard Muscat returns to New Zealand with Trass Family Motorsport

2016 Garry Rogers Motorsport Development Series driver Richard Muscat will line up with Trass Family Motorsport's Ferrari 458 GT3 for the second round of the Mahindra North Island Endurance Series this weekend at Hampton Downs.

Muscat will take on the three-hour race alongside the team's regular driver Sam Fillmore, occupying the slot typically filled by Danny Stutterd. The 24-year-old tested the TFM machine in the days leading up to round one of the North Island Endurance Series at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park.

"It is a welcome surprise to have him on the team, he is quick!" said team owner Gerald Trass.

The drive will be a one-off for the Australian, who hasn't driven in New Zealand since the 2014 Highlands 101 where he dramatically lost out on the 101-lap endurance win after running out of fuel with the finish line in sight. Though he wasn't able to win the Highlands event, he did claim the 2014 Australian GT Championship, driving an Erebus Motorsport AMG SLS GT3.

Earlier this year, Muscat made his V8 debut with Garry Rogers Motorsport in the Dunlop Development Series. He currently sits 12th in the championship standings, with four rounds remaining in the season.

The three-hour race at round one of the series was won by the SaReNi Camaro GT3 of John McIntyre and Simon Gilbertson, after thick fogg cut down the amount of competitive running to a mere 20-minute sprint. Reigning NZ Touring Car Champion Simon Evans and co-driver Gene Rollinson took second, ahead of Jonny Reid and Neil Foster's International Motorsport Audi R8 LMS Ultra.
