We all know Kiwis are a slight bit more biased towards other Kiwis. It’s just the way we are.
Still, it must be a pretty surreal feeling knowing one of your country’s most celebrated motorsport icons believes you have the potential to go to the very top.
Greg Murphy thinks just that of young Liam Lawson.
The four-time Bathurst 1000 victor suggests the young Formula 2 star has what it takes to become an F1 world champion.
“To make it to the top echelon of motorsport is a challenge that most drivers can’t overcome, but personally, I think Liam has all the ingredients to be an F1 world champion,” Murphy said.
Murphy’s words came on the same day it was announced Lawson’s 2022 F2 campaign would have the support of the Tony Quinn Foundation.
Murphy is a trustee of the Foundation, which has already committed over $200,000 worth of scholarships for promising junior talents.
“To support [Lawson’s] journey towards this through the TQF is incredibly rewarding and a real thrill to be a part of,” Murphy said.
Tony Quinn, the leading man of the Foundation, is another big believer in Lawson’s potential.
“Liam’s proven to be quite a talent and he has that special sparkle in his eye,” he said.
The TQF logo will feature on Lawson’s 2022 livery, alongside other sponsors Red Bull and Rodin Cars.
Lawson is confirmed to be moving teams this F2 offseason. He leaves the Hitech GP outfit for the Carlin team.
The 2022 F2 season kicks off at the Bahrain Grand Prix in March.
