New Zealand’s Hunter McElrea returns to action in the Indy NXT Series this weekend and will compete on the streets of Nashville in support of the IndyCar Music City Grand Prix.
The Andretti Autosport driver sits fourth in the standings, only 46 points behind leader Christian Rasmussen. Despite having featured on the podium only once this year, at Road America, McElrea has finished in the top five in six of the eight races this season.
The Kiwi has also had past success on the Streets of Nashville, finishing on the podium in third in last year’s race.
Rasmussen took the championship lead by winning the last round in Iowa after previous leader Nolan Siegel ran into trouble late in the race. McElrea finished the race in fifth.
Siegel is now second in the standings, 22 points off the top spot and 21 points ahead of third-placed Jacob Abel, a 2023 Formula Regional Oceania competitor.
McElrea is only three points off Abel and seven ahead of the second 2023 Formula Regional Oceania competitor in the field, Louis Foster, who was also runner-up in the 2023 New Zealand Grand Prix.
Australian Matthew Brabham will rejoin proceedings for his second outing in the series after finishing fourth last round.
This weekend’s race covers 35 laps of the Nashville street circuit for 118.29 km. Qualifying begins at 7.05 am on Sunday, with the race at 3.10 am on Monday. Both will be shown live on the IndyCar Live website.
