Matthew Payne has clinched his debut Porsche Carrera Cup Australia pole position at The Bend.
The young Kiwi obliterated the field, with his best lap over half a second quicker than second place.
The result is also the first pole for Earl Bamber Motorsport – a Kiwi team – on Australian soil.
The South Australian circuit was hit by a heavy shower of rain during the 20-minute session.
The tricky conditions played into Payne’s hand and he delivered a standout lap to defeat Cooper Murray to the top spot.
“I went straight out for the first couple of laps and the car felt really good,” Payne said.
“We were on the pace straight away and I kept improving.
“The track was slowly drying, but it did start to get a bit greasy towards the end. I think that sort of hampered everyone’s lap times.”
Payne added that he was shocked about how large the margin to Murray was at the end of the session.
Only four cars were within a second of Payne’s benchmark.
“The gap was quite big, I was quite surprised.
“But, hey, we are trying our hardest. So, I am really happy.”
Payne will have one race today before two more conclude the weekend tomorrow.
All races can be caught live on Sky Sport, with today’s affair starting at 5.20 pm.
