Rising New Zealand star Liam Lawson will make his second F1 appearance of 2022 when he takes part in the first practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix this weekend.
Lawson will take the AlphaTauri of Yuki Tsunoda to the track on Saturday New Zealand time, the session beginning at 6.30am.
It’s the second time the Kiwi has taken to the track in a F1 practice session this year, the first being at Spa-Francorchamps in late August.
Conditions were tricky in that session, the majority of laps completed on hard tyres. A red flag also disrupted the session before a true flying lap was conducted on softs, persistent light rain also challenging the field.
He now gets another chance to show his capabilities, this time at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
There will also be some Trans-Tasman rivalry on display in the session as Australian Jack Doohan also takes to the track, for Alpine.
Whilst all four Red Bull and AlphaTauri seats have been filled for 2023, Lawson will continue to operate as Red Bull’s reserve driver for the season, a role he secured off Juri Vips in July this year.
There is also growing speculation Daniel Ricciardo will join the fold in a similar capacity following his exit from McLaren at the end of this year.
Track action has been limited of late for the F2 field, a gap of other two months between the previous event at Monza and the final event at Abu Dhabi.
Lawson sits seventh in the F2 standings heading into that event, having three Sprint Race victories to his name in 2022, in France, Saudi Arabia and Belgium.
The practice session will be shown live on Spark Sport from 6.30am NZ time on Saturday.
