McLaren Formula 1 star Lando Norris has been confirmed as the latest wildcard to join the Supercars grid for the fifth round of the BP All Star Eseries.
The 20-year-old sim-racing aficionado will pilot an additional Walkinshaw Andretti Untied Commodore in this Wednesday’s three races at Spa-Francorchamps.
Norris has proven to be exceptionally quick in the virtual world. Dubbed ‘an alien’ by defending Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin due to his incredible pace, Norris claimed victory on his IndyCar iRacing debut at COTA and was on course to victory in last weekend’s controversial race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
He has also competed for the McLaren team in the official F1 Virtual GP series.
“I’m super excited to announce I’ll be joining the Supercars grid in Spa this week,” said Norris.
“There’s a lot of fast drivers in it. It’s going to be very tough, very competitive, but I’ve watched pretty much all of the races so far in the championship and it looks a lot of fun.”
Norris is no stranger to the hallowed Belgian venue, claiming two out of three wins there in 2017 while racing European Formula 3 with Carlin. He would also pick up a podium place the following year during the Formula 2 sprint race.
On his Formula 1 debut at the circuit, Norris was running a highly credible fifth before the power unit of his McLaren-Renault suffered a mechanical issue on the final lap of the Grand Prix.
Norris becomes the second F1 driver to compete in the series after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen made a wildcard appearance in the round two.
Round five of the All Star Eseries gets underway on May 6 from 8 pm NZT on Sky Sport and via the official Supercars Facebook Page.
