Only 0.0281 seconds separated the top three drivers in this evening’s Adelaide 500 qualifying session, with Brodie Kostecki going fastest with a late lap to take provisional pole ahead of Saturday’s Top 10 Shootout.
David Reynolds jumped up to second in the closing stages, topping an impressive Matt Payne, whose blistering pace had seen him hold the provisional pole right until the chequered flag.
Payne’s best lap of 1:19.0741 came early in the 15-minute session and was enough for him to claim third.
Shane van Gisbergen ensures the pressure remains on Kostecki for the championship, qualifying fourth, 0.1624 seconds off the top. The three-time champion trails the Erebus driver by 131 points entering the round.
Thomas Randle qualified for the Top 10 Shootout from fifth, ahead of Anton De Pasquale, Will Brown, Chaz Mostert, Cam Waters and James Golding, respectively.
Broc Feeney narrowly misses out on progressing and will start from 11th, falling 0.0346 seconds shy of Golding’s best time.
Will Davison starts from 12th, ahead of Nick Percat and Todd Hazelwood. Andre Heimgartner could only manage the 17th-quickest time and will start Saturday’s opener from the eighth row, next to Cameron Hill.
Saturday’s Supercars action begins with Practice 3 at 12.15 pm (NZ time), with the Top 10 Shootout following at 2.35 pm and the race beginning at 5.20 pm.
Sunday brings a further qualifying session and Top 10 Shootout before the season finale at 5.15 pm.
