Brodie Kostecki has stormed to a clean sweep at The Bend, topping Cam Waters and Thomas Randle for his third win of the weekend in this evening’s Race 21.
As was the case in the earlier Race 21, the Erebus Motorsport driver controlled proceedings from the beginning, but he was pressured by Waters for the remainder of the race following the pit window.
Waters had gotten off to a slow start and dropped to fourth before Turn 1, but he quickly regained third off Randle and second off a fast-starting Nick Percat over the following two laps before hunting down Kostecki.
The pace of Camaro would ultimately prove to be too much, with Kostecki extending his championship lead over Shane van Gisbergen to 137 points ahead of the upcoming enduros.
Randle would overcome Percat to take his third podium of the weekend, providing Tickford with some respite following a difficult start to the season.
Percat’s result of fourth was his best of the season, and he finished one place ahead of van Gisbergen, who found himself under investigation post-race for a potential pit-lane infringement. Triple Eight has since been fined $1500 and docked 30 championship points after the wheel gun on his right rear was still connected when the car was dropped.
Will Davison and Anton De Pasquale were sixth and seventh, respectively, while James Courtney, Chaz Mostert and Jack Le Brocq rounded out the top ten.
Andre Heimgartner finished 12th, while Matt Payne’s strong weekend came to a disappointing end when a cross-threaded wheel nut slowed his Lap 5 pit stop, effectively dropping him to the rear of the field from a comfortable top-ten position. Payne would recover and make ground to finish 18th.
Broc Feeney was the last car home following late contact with David Reynolds, which sent him off the track at Turn 18 on the penultimate lap. Reynolds received a 15-second penalty post-race, dropping him from ninth to 20th.
Supercars return to action on September 15-17 with the Sandown 500, the first of this year’s enduros. Kiwis Jaxon Evans, Fabian Coulthard and Richie Stanaway will join the field as co-drivers.
