Jack Doohan has won this mornings F2 Sprint Race at Silverstone, holding off a late charge by DAMS driver Ayumu Iwasa. Enzo Fittipaldi rounded out the podium places, with Marcus Armstrong the best of the kiwi drivers finishing one place outside the points in 9th.
It was the first F2 win of Doohan’s career, with the Australian son of motorcycling great Mick Doohan only achieving a podium once before, when he finished second in the Barcelona Feature Race.
Championship leader Felipe Drugovich finished fifth, one place behind nearest rival Theo Pourchaire.
A drying track challenged the drivers, and a rolling start was required after an additional formation lap was taken behind the safety car. It was a tame race as drivers were cautious in the conditions. Overtaking was aplenty, however, in the second half of the race as intermediate tyres were managed differently by many of the teams.
The first laps of the race were clean as a result of the rolling start, until Liam Lawson’s front wing went awry on lap 6, relegating him to the rear of the field as he returned to the pits to have it replaced. The Red Bull reserve driver remained at the back of the pack and was the last of the finishers. This was the only incident of note in race proceedings.
Both kiwi drivers will be relying on a better Feature Race this evening, which starts at 9.05pm tonight New Zealand time.
