Kiwis Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy return to the 2024/25 Formula E World Championship this weekend with the Mexico City E-Prix at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Evans enters the weekend at the top of the standings following his stunning last-to-first victory in Sao Paulo in early December.
Powertrain issues had compromised Evans’s weekend early in Brazil, forcing him to start from the rear of the field after missing qualifying, but the Kiwi fought back, equaling Lucas di Grassi and Sébastien Buemi as the drivers with the most wins since Formula E began in 2014.
He was also the first-ever driver to win a Formula E race from last on the grid.
The 30-year-old is looking to carry that momentum with him into this weekend’s race.
“To start the season with a win – especially given the circumstances from last on the grid – was a special feeling,” said Evans.
“There’s no time to look back, though, and I am expecting it to be another closely fought race in Mexico. We will be working hard to achieve another strong result.”
Sao Paulo brought a contrast of fortune for Nick Cassidy, who was caught out in a frightening incident that flipped reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein.
Cassidy was sandwiched in a three-wide battle between Maximilian Gunther and Wehrlein at the Turn 4/5 chicane, the contact broke the suspension on the Jaguar and sent it into Wehrlein exiting Turn 6, who was flipped driver-side first into the outside wall.
He’s eager to bounce back in Round 2 and build on the podium he secured at the same venue in 2024.
“Although the São Paulo race did not end how we wanted it to, I know we have a fast race car,” Cassidy said.
“I am hopeful that we can find more performance in the Jaguar I‑TYPE 7 and will be doing all I can to be on the podium in Mexico City.”
Despite Cassidy’s DNF, Jaguar TCS Racing sit second in the Team’s Championship, only two points behind McLaren. Jaguar also holds the advantage in the Manufacturer’s standings ahead of Nissan.
“To come away from São Paulo leading two out of three championships was a great boost for the team,” said Jaguar TCS Team Principal James Barclay.
“We know there is still a lot more to come, and we are working flat out to get the Jaguar I‑TYPE 7 into the right window out on track. There is a lot of performance still to be unlocked and we are working hard to try and be in a position to have another strong weekend in Mexico City.
“Mitch and Nick showed their class in the race in Brazil and we are eager to come away from Mexico with a strong haul of points from both our drivers if we can. We enjoyed podium success last time out in Mexico City and would love to do so again this weekend.
“We never rest on our laurels, though, and have some areas to work on. As always, the competition is going to be very close and we look forward to the challenge.”
Qualifying for this weekend’s race begins on Sunday at 4.30 am NZST, with the racing going green at 8.00 am. Sky Sport will have live coverage.
