Seven-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson will test for the Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet IndyCar team at Barber Motorsports Park next month.
“Jimmie is a friend of the team and a world-class driver and, much like the ride-swap he did in a McLaren Formula One car with Fernando Alonso in 2018, Jimmie expressed an interest in trying an Indy car and we’re happy to oblige,” said team spokesman for Arrow McLaren SP.
Johnson posted on social media images of himself being fitted for a seat with the ironic caption “so much for a roomy interior.”
44-year-old Johnson has already indicated that 2020 will be his last season in the NASCAR Sprint Championship.
His seven titles puts him tied for the all-time most with Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty — both members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s inaugural class.
Johnson was present at IndyCar’s test from the Circuit of the Americas last month, though any news regarding a future drive was kept under covers until today.
