Former Garry Rogers Motorsport Supercar driver James Golding has stolen the limelight at yesterday’s Australian Karting championship season opener.
Held from The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia, Golding fended off the challenge from KZ2 title favourite Troy Loeskow to win the class’ final.
Queenslander Loeskow had dominated much of the heats held prior to the main event on Sunday afternoon, qualifying on pole position ahead of Golding.
But it was Golding with the electric getaway, leading the field through turn one and claiming a comfortable victory in the 25 lapper.
The weekend was also headlined by a record number of entrants. A massive 316 entries made their way to the venue to compete across eight different classes.
The weekend was the inaugural Australian karting round to be held from The Bend before the championship heads east to Hume International Raceway in Victoria.
Golding will partner Supercars veteran Mark Winterbottom for this year’s Pirtek Enduro Cup while also piloting GRM’s sole S5000 car for 2020.
