New Zealand driver Hunter McElrea picked up third place in the seventh round of Indy Lights at Road America this weekend with teammate Christian Rasmussen taking his maiden win.
Sting Ray Robb took pole position in qualifying ahead of teammates McElrea, Rasmussen and Matthew Brabham but soon saw Rasmussen gain the lead upon the race start.
Covering off McElrea, Robb left the gap open for Rasmussen to slip up the inside at turn one. Come turn five, Rasmussen had a good lead but teammate Brabham had an off ending up behind McElrea and Jacob Abel.
The race was neutralised by Ernie Francis Jr. going off into the gravel at turn seven.
Upon the race restarting on lap four, there was contact between McElrea and Brabham but no damage was caused.
Yellow flags came out again as Antonio Serravalle suffered an engine failure with the race not getting underway again until lap nine.
Robb had a run on Rasmussen upon the race restarting with Brabham on the outside of the Danish driver and Robb on the inside.
After both drivers clearing Rasmussen, Brabham ran off the track on the corner exit and Rasmussen regained the lead after he dived up the inside of Robb.
An accident involving Christian Bogle launching his car into catch fencing caused the race to be stopped and didn’t get underway again until hours later after IndyCar had raced.
With Rasmussen taking the win, Robb managed to finish second with Brabham dropping from third to sixth. Hunter McElrea finished the race in third position for Andretti Autosport, one position down from where he qualified.
