Callum Hedge finished third in the final race of the opening Porsche Carrera Cup Australia round in Melbourne last night.
Australian Jackson Walls won the race over Race 2 winner Max Vidau; the two locked in an enthralling duel over the final few laps before Walls pulled just clear.
Hedge followed the duo in file with a Safety Car concluding the race.
The result sees Walls take opening round honours on a countback following Vidau’s victory over him yesterday and Race 1’s non-result due to a lengthy red flag.
Yesterday’s pole-sitter, Hedge, finished the round in third after finishing in that position in each of the two races.
Last night’s race was delayed due to problems for New Zealand Pro-AM driver Tim Miles, a broken driveshaft on the warm-up lap forcing him out.
Once it got underway, Walls and Vidau battled into the opening corner, the former getting into the race lead while Hedge slotted into third ahead of Wood and Nick McBride.
Light rain began to fall on Lap 7, which allowed Vidau to pounce for the lead, only for Walls to retake it several turns later, and their battle brought Hedge back into the mix as the trio looked to fight for the podium spots among themselves.
That battle never got the chance to eventuate, the rain increasing in intensity and bringing out a Safety Car on Lap 8, which concluded the race the following circuit.
Ultimately, it was Walls from Vidau, Hedge, Wood, David Russell and McBride.
Kiwi Chris Pither finished 15th as he continues to get up to speed with a new style of racecar.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Australia contingent next return to action in Darwin in support of the Darwin Triple Crown Supercars event on June 16-18.
