With just 25 laps remaining, Scott Dixon’s hopes of scoring a second Indy 500 victory were dashed after a lock up coming into the pitlane.
Dixon had been leading a majority of the 200 lap race up until his final stop where a brake lock up saw his speed exceed the pitlane limit. This resulted in a speeding violation being handed to the Kiwi driver leaving him with no other choice but to serve a drive-through penalty.
“Are you serious,” Dixon can be heard saying over the team radio after being handed the violation.
The mistake saw Dixon’s lead fall to 21st place when the chequered flag fell offering the win to Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, Marcus Ericsson.
It was another day to forget for fellow New Zealander Scott McLaughlin after he hit the wall at turn three, ending his race.
