GT New Zealand Champion and Porsche Sprint Challenge Australia competitor Marco Giltrap will partner three-time Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Champion Chris van der Drift for a full campaign in Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia.
The duo will drive the Lamborghini Auckland’s Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2 for the six-round competition, which returns this weekend from a three-year Covid-induced hiatus.
It’s an opportunity both drivers are excited for, each full of praise for the other in what shapes up to be a star all-Kiwi pairing.
“Chris is super quick, and as defending Super Trofeo Asia champion, his knowledge of the series, tracks, and Lamborghini Huracán is unrivalled,” said Giltrap in a release published by the Giltrap Group.
“I’m genuinely impressed at how versatile Marco has been, claiming podiums in the 86, Cayman and 911 GT3, often against some seriously experienced competition,” said van der Drift, who won in Pro class of 2019 ‘s Super Trofeo Asia with Evan Chen.
“I loved racing with the Silver Fern on my car as an A1GP rookie, so to see that fern on the #84 Huracán is nothing short of awesome. I cannot wait to show the rest of the field how fast two Kiwi lads can fly.”
The first round of the competition begins this weekend at Sepang before rounds in Adelaide (9-11 June), Fuji (14-16 July), South Korea (18-20 August), Shanghai (8-10 September) and Vallelunga (16-17 November).
The final round of the competition, in Italy, also doubles as the Grand Finals, with Super Trofeo Asia competitors squaring off against European and American entrants following their own rounds at the venue in the days prior.
Compatriot Brendan Leitch will also be present at that event, given he competes in Super Trofeo Europe with Leipert Motorsport.
Super Trofeo races are 50 minutes long each, with a driver change roughly mid-way through, all rounds featuring two races.
The entry, which is being supported by Giltrap Group, SIXT, Smeg, UDC, Huffer, and Inmotion, is being run by Absolute Racing and adds to the schedule for both drivers. Van der Drift will continue his Porsche Carrera Cup Asia campaign whilst Giltrap continues to battle it out in the Porsche Sprint Challenge Australia.
Both had had an extremely successful start to 2023, Giltrap winning the GT New Zealand Championship as well as taking two wins and a second in the Sprint Challenge’s first round at Phillip Island.
Van der Drift finished on the podium twice in the opening round of the Carrera Cup Asia, which was also held at Sepang.
