George Russell has claimed the first pole position of his career and will lead the field in tomorrows Hungarian Grand Prix. The Brit set the best time in the final run of Q3, denying Carlos Sainz top spot by .044s.
Russell lived up to his nickname “Mr Saturday” as he went to claim top spot, eclipsing his personal best of P2 on the grid, set in his Williams in wet conditions in Spa last year.
Starting third will be the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, with Lando Norris starting alongside in fourth. Alpine lock out the third row with Esteban Ocon pipping Fernando Alonso by .06s.
It was a disappointing session for Red Bull, with Sergio Perez knocked out in Q2, blaming the Haas of Kevin Magnussen for obstructing him as he went about setting his fastest time. Perez will start P11, only one spot behind teammate and championship leader Max Verstappen, who suffered mechanical difficulties during Q3 and saw him unable to set a competitive time.
Sir Lewis Hamilton could only manage the seventh fastest time, and will start next to former teammate Valtteri Bottas, with Daniel Ricciardo rounding out the top 10 in ninth.
Sebastian Vettel will start a lowly 18th in the Grand Prix, following his retirement announcement this week.
Racing starts at 1am tonight, and will be streamed live on Spark Sport
