Following the reveal of the seventh-generation Ford Mustang and its race car variants last week, there’s a possibility that Ford Supercars drivers could now become drivers for the factory GT driver pool.
The American manufacturer is taking GT racing seriously with the company entering into both GT3 and GT4 racing in 2024 but before then, the new Mustang will make its racing debut as a Gen3 Supercar from next year.
As Ford’s GT cars will be sold to its racing team customers, it will need a pool of factory drivers to supply teams with for race events.
Ford Performance confirmed to Motorsport.com that Supercars drivers will be considered for these roles.
That means those behind the wheel of the Mustang Supercar next year such as Chaz Mostert, David Reynolds or Kiwi Matt Payne could travel further afield to compete in races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
With former Supercars champions like Scott McLaughlin jumping from the series to IndyCar, the GT programme now opens the door to more opportunities for more drivers.
