Following the sudden passing of Ken Block in a snowmobile accident last week, the FIA World Rally Championship has withdrawn the American driver’s #43 race number from the 2023 season.
Block was well known for his sideways antics both on and off the tarmac and was a beloved member of the rallying community.
The use of his race number spanned multiple disciplines such as WRC, rallycross, various Gymkhana stunts, and more, cementing #43 in the minds of many.
“Given the enormous contribution our great friend Ken Block made to motor sport and the fact that he was held in such high regard by people the world over, it is entirely appropriate that his #43 will be withdrawn from use during the 2023 WRC season,” said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
“While it’s a small gesture, we hope that it is one that will bring some comfort to his family and friends at this time. Ken was a true legend and the memory of this true legend will live with us forever.”
There has been a tremendous amount of outpour following his untimely death with fans from across the globe paying tribute in their own unique ways.
Some have recreated Block’s iconic racing liveries which feature “#43” on their own street cars while others have taken to the virtual world in videogames like Forza Horizon 5 in digital recreations of his cars.
“The impact that Ken had on rallying in taking our sport to an all-new audience cannot be underestimated,” said WRC Promoter managing director Jona Siebel.
“For Ken, fan engagement was paramount, making him a beloved figure of the WRC. As a sport, withdrawing the number 43 – a number synonymous with Ken –is our small mark of respect for Ken’s family, friends and fans.”
