Broc Feeney has topped the second practice session of the OTR SuperSprint, immediately getting to work to set the fastest time of the weekend this far on his first flying lap, his 1:49.9907, the first sub-1:50 of the day.
Tickford’s Thomas Randle, who topped first practice, was second-quickest, his 1:50.2977 falling three-tenths shy of the session-topping time. Chaz Mostert, Anton De Pasquale and David Reynolds rounded out the top five, with Ford Mustangs claiming seven of the top ten positions.
James Courtney’s session ended with no representative time set; the Tickford veteran ran wide into the grass at the final turn and spun across the track to make hard contact with the inside wall, left-front first with the left-rear following. The #5 Mustang picked up significant damage, most noticeably on the left rear. The team have worked well on the repair, and Courtney is expected to return for qualifying.
De Pasquale lit up the timing sheets early in the practice, his second flyer moving him into second, behind Feeney, before teams ventured to pit lane ahead of the second half of the 30-minute run.
Van Gisbergen returned to the track with 15 minutes remaining after running onto the grass earlier in the session, his seventh lap of the practice run on fresh super-soft tyres. The Kiwi set two personal-best sectors before returning to the lane with further issues reported in the wildcard chassis.
Jack Le Brocq was the next driver to have an off-track venture, the Truck Assist Racing driver running long at Turn 8 but maintaining control of his car to enter Turn 9.
The track was again inundated with activity over the final minutes, with Courtney being the only driver to remain in the lane.
Times tumbled as the chequered flag flew, with a strong Mustang contingent moving into the top ten. No one could eclipse Feeney’s early time, however, leaving the Red Bull driver at the top of the leaderboard.
Randle jumped to second on his final flyer, while Mostert also improved to third. De Pasquale and Reynolds rounded out the top five, with Will Brown sixth, Waters seventh, Heimgartner eight, Payne ninth and Will Davison rounding out the top ten.
Van Gisbergen failed to set a representative time again, returning to the lane early.
Supercars return for the first qualifying of the weekend at 4.10 pm.
