After a jam-packed few weeks of racing in some of the biggest events around the world, Jaxon Evans will cap off a busy period of international racing with a return to the Supercars Championship for this weekend’s Townsville 500.
The Kiwi’s bumper month began midway through June and has seen him compete in highly esteemed GT events at famous circuits in Australia, Asia, and Europe.
Evans’ busy tour started last month with a solid performance in Supercars’ Darwin Triple Crown. The following week, he jumped on a plane to Japan to contest the GT World Challenge Asia event at Fuji.
Over the last weekend of June, Evans tackled the prestigious 24 Hour of Spa, where he enjoyed an impressive run alongside Thomas Preining and Joel Eriksson in the Phantom Global Racing Porsche to finish the chaotic event in 26th.
“It’s been a busy schedule, but I’ve enjoyed every moment so far, and there have been a few pinch-yourself moments along the way,” said Evans.
“I am obviously feeling some small effects from all the long flights and time zone changes, but I have generally been on top of it. As long as you listen to your body and both eat and hydrate well, you can continue to operate normally.”
His whirlwind four-week tour now reaches its final destination with the picturesque Townsville City hosting the sixth round of the 2024 Supercars season, where Evans will once again be behind the wheel of the #12 SCT Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro with Brad Jones Racing.
While Townsville will be quite unfamiliar to the New Zealander, having never raced there before, Evans will enter the round full of confidence after a promising outing at Hidden Valley last month. There, he enjoyed one of the best finishes of his debut Supercars season thus far, finishing 11th and finding himself in the running for his second top-10 finish.
“It will be nice to wrap up this busy period in Townsville for what will be my first race there in anything,” he added. “It’s been a while since I have raced on a street circuit, but the layout looks enjoyable.
“The team had a strong showing there last year, and I am hoping we can build on that, as well as on our momentum from Darwin, so I am looking forward to a big weekend.”
The New Zealander will be on track for the first time on Friday with the two practice sessions before Saturday’s Qualifying and Top 10 Shootout set up the opening 250km outing at 4.40 pm NZST before contesting an identical schedule on Sunday.
The NTI Townsville 500 is the sixth round of the 2024 Supercars Championship season and will take place at Reid Park from July 5 to 7.
