Formula E wrapped up preseason testing in Valencia overnight, with Kiwi pair Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy well placed ahead of January’s season-opener.
Evans was fourth quickest in the final open test day. Cassidy was a few places back in seventh.
You can never look too much into lap times in testing. Several variables can make cars seem faster or slower than their actual performance.
But saying that, Mercedes-powered cars have looked dangerously quick over all three days.
Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara topped the final session with the best lap of the entire test. The team uses the same Mercedes powertrain as the factory outfit.
Evans completed 217 laps over all three days and is buoyed by Jaguar’s early form.
“I think overall it’s been a good week,” he said.
“We started off strong and hit the ground running, which is promising. We’ve been competitive in every session, every day this week, which has been really encouraging.”
The only hiccup for Evans was a powertrain reset during a simulated race that caused his car to stall on the grid.
But the team were confident the issue was a simple mistake on their end and would not evolve into a larger problem.
Cassidy will also take a lot of pride in what, from an outside perspective, seemed like some trouble-free few days.
His teammate Robin Frijns topped the first test day, and the Kiwi was in the top-ten times on two of the three days.
Formula E opens its 2022 season with back-to-back rounds in Saudi Arabia in late January.
