Jack Doohan has won this mornings F2 Sprint Race in Hungary, leading for the majority of the race after starting from pole position. Finishing behind the Australia was Juri Vips, with Enzo Fittipaldi rounding out the podium places.
The Australian lead the majority of the race bar the first two corners, after a fast starting Fittipaldi took the lead off the start before running wide into Turn 3, allowing Doohan and Vips to pass.
Liam Lawson was the best placed New Zealander with a respectable sixth place, one spot ahead of Marcus Armstrong. Both Kiwi’s benefitted from a Lap 1 incident between Dennis Hauger and Logan Sargeant, which eliminated both drivers from the race and forced seventh place sitter Theo Pourchaire to take evasive action, dropping him to 16th.
Doohan caught the field napping at the safety car restart, building a quick lead over Vips and Fittipaldi which he never relinquished.
Armstrong sat the better placed of the New Zealander’s in seventh, challenging Jehan Daruvala for sixth over the majority of early proceedings. Just was the case last week in France, twice, Armstrong was hit whilst managing an overtake on Lap 19, with Daruvala awarded a 10-second time penalty for causing an incident. There was no damage for Armstrong, however, who only lost one spot to Lawson following the drama.
That was how things remained, with Lawson finishing 13 seconds behind championship leader Felipe Drugovich who came in fifth place. Frederick Vesti was the fourth best driver of the day, finishing nine seconds outside the podium.
Armstrong will start on the front row in tonights Feature Race, which begins at 9.35pm and is live on Spark Sport.
