Fabian Coulthard will race in this year’s Bathurst 1000, securing a co-driver gig with Walkinshaw Andretti United.
While the team has not confirmed who Coulthard will partner, it means the Kiwi will share a drive with either Nick Percat or reigning Bathurst winner Chaz Mostert.
The news no doubt gives Kiwis a sigh of relief. Only a few weeks ago, we learnt Coulthard had lost his full-time Supercars seat despite having a contract to race this season.
Since then, it was a case of which team would pick up the free-agent, one with a proven track record that includes 13 Supercar wins.
“It’s great to be joining Walkinshaw Andretti United for 2022, the team is on the move and I’m really excited to see what we can do together at Bathurst this year,” Coulthard said.
“When I found out I wasn’t going to be driving in a full-time capacity in 2022, my focus then changed to aligning myself with what I think is the best opportunity to win at Bathurst, and that was here.”
Coulthard is no stranger to the WAU outfit. He raced with the team for two seasons between 2010 and 2011, although he wouldn’t collect his first win until 2013 with Brad Jones Racing.
Even so, WAU has recently become a real powerhouse team in the Supercars ranks, and Mostert’s Bathurst domination last year highlights that fact.
WAU team boss Bruce Stewart says adding Coulthard to the team will only give grunt to their Bathurst repeat push.
“Fabian was a clear target of ours once he became available,” he said.
“There’s no doubt he has the talent to be a full-time driver in the category, so to have him with us is fantastic and really strengthens our lineup.”
Veteran co-driver Warren Luff was also announced to join WAU for October’s enduro.
