Last year’s United Arab Emirates F4 champion, and son of former F1 racer Alexander Wurz, Charlie Wurz has been today announced as a competitor in this year’s Toyota Formula Regional Oceania.
Wurz will drive for M2 Competition alongside the likes of Porsche Carrera Cup race-winner Callum Hedge, Australian Formula Ford competitor Ryder Quinn, North Island Formula Ford leader Liam Sceats and American up-and-comer David Morales.
The Austrian is looking forward to joining his teammates to tackle the series., saying “Ever since I can remember my dad has recounted stories of his time racing in New Zealand, how it was such an important step in his career and how much he loved it.
“I’m so excited to be able to start 2023 with this experience and a big thank you to TOYOTA GAZOO Racing and M2 for making it happen.”
M2 team principal Mark Pilcher believes the strength of his squad will encourage their driver’s to be at their best.
“It’s great that Charlie can begin his next step in New Zealand and we welcome him aboard,” he said.
“Young drivers from F4 have made this step with success and we look forward to helping Charlie do the same.”
Consistency was key in a busy 2022 for Wurz, the 17-year-old scoring ten podiums including two wins in UAE F4. In addition to this, he never once finished outside the top 10 in a massive field which saw over 28 cars on the grid at times.
He ran dual-duties, also competing with Prema Racing Italian Formula 4 Championship where he finished fourth overall in a grid of over 40 drivers.
Wurz also competed in select rounds of ADAC German F4, scoring three podiums and replaced a sick driver for one round of Spanish F4 with, taking P3.
Toyota FT-60s are a step up, however, which will encourage some tight racing from the field.
The first round of competition begins just next weekend at Highlands Motorsport Park.
