New Zealand’s Nick Cassidy has claimed his first win of the Formula E season with victory in this morning’s second race of the Berlin E-Prix.
It was another strong result for Mitch Evans, who came home in fourth, behind only Cassidy and podium-getters Jake Dennis and Jean-Eric Vergne.
More importantly, championship leader Pascal Wehrlein could only manage seventh, seeing his lead over Cassidy in the standings evaporate to just 4 points.
It continues a strong run of form for the Kiwi victor, who hasn’t finished outside the top five since Round 3 at Saudi Arabia.
Today’s win was one which never looked in doubt in the second half of the race when Cassidy hit the front with 16 laps to run and never sacrificed his spot.
It was a stark contrast to the opening half, which saw the lead change consistently through fierce battles in the top 10, with no driver seemingly wanting to hold the lead to allow for the added slipstream benefits from following.
Up stepped Cassidy, the Aucklander charging from sixth to the front quickly, highlights including a three-car pass at Turn 1 in his surge forward, never looking back.
It’s yet another performance from the Envision racer that shows just how incredible his race pace is, having qualified eighth for the event.
Fourth is a good result for Evans, too, having become stuck in a fierce battle pack that saw cars running two-wide for long periods of time. He almost came unstuck in the final laps, making contact with Antonio Felix da Costa before quickly returning to pace.
Despite the strong result, he still drops one spot in the championship to fifth. More importantly, however, he’s one of five drivers who can mathematically take the championship lead at the Monaco E-Prix on May 6.
