Nick Cassidy secured his fourth consecutive Formula E podium in this morning’s Berlin E-Prix, extending his advantage in the Drivers’ Championship to 16 points over Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein.
The Kiwi finished behind only winner Antonio Felix da Costa for his seventh top-three finish across ten races this season. He also set the fastest lap for the third straight event for an additional championship point.
Mitch Evans cycled through the lead group but lost two places through a late lockup to come home in sixth.
The results see Jaguar TCS Racing extend their advantage in the Teams’ Championship to 54 points over Porsche.
“Another eventful race today, but it’s been a successful weekend – my most successful to date in my Formula E history – and we leave Berlin leading the Drivers’ World Championship,” said Cassidy.
“We made positive changes overnight and we had a really fast package, it felt like we’d adapted the car to be well suited for this track, so feeling really proud of the team for that.
“I feel for Mitch. I think we both had the pace and the opportunity for a podium today. I hope to take this positive momentum into the next race weekend in Shanghai.”
Evans was also in the mix late in proceedings, hitting the front following a late Safety Car but with one Attack Mode left to use. Knowing this, da Costa kept the pressure on the Jaguar, taking the lead and putting a slight gap on the field as Evans and Cassidy dealt with challenges from Oliver Rowland and Wehrlein.
Once Evans used his Attack Mode, he fell to third. Cassidy then battled his way past and into the podium places, taking second place off Rowland on the final lap, with the leader one second up the road.
Wehrlein and Dennis passed Evans in quick succession when he locked up and ran wide at a hairpin over the closing laps, leaving the Kiwi to come home sixth.
“Today was a really tricky race – we were looking good at the start, and we were looking strong on energy,” said Evans.
“Unfortunately, a few varying factors meant we were snookered with our second ATTACK MODE, and it ruined my chances of a podium. We’ll go away and analyse the data as a team and see how we can come back stronger in Shanghai.”
Team Principal James Barclay added, “Another intense but highly entertaining race today to culminate the weekend here in Berlin.
“We started the day very well with a good qualifying for both drivers and improvement in our one lap pace from yesterday, great work from all to do this. The race was another example of where good race craft and critical decision-making at the right time are key.
“Ultimately, we have a lot to be proud of after another double-points finish, Nick on the podium again this weekend in second place, and Mitch fighting for a podium right up to the final laps.
“The team and drivers have worked their socks off, and this weekend’s results and learnings are massive motivation for the next two races in Shanghai.”
Formula E returns for the Shanghai E-Prix double-header on May 25-26.
