Audi has officially chosen Sauber as the team in which it will be partnering up with for its Formula 1 campaign.
The partnership follows Audi’s announcement that it would enter the sport back in August as a power unit supplier.
Plans are also in place for the German carmaker to acquire a stake in the Sauber Group which will compete as the Audi factory team from 2026 onwards.
Sauber currently races as the works team for Alfa Romeo, operating under the Alfa Romeo F1 Team Orlen name.
Audi’s power unit will be manufactured at its Motorsport Competence Centre in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany, while the car itself will be made by Sauber in Hinwil, Switzerland.
The Neuburg facility is also being expanded in terms of personnel, buildings and technical infrastructure to accommodate Audi’s future participation in the sport.
Sauber will be responsible for planning and executing race operations.
“We are delighted to have gained such an experienced and competent partner for our ambitious Formula 1 project,” says Oliver Hoffmann, Member of the Board for Technical Development at Audi AG.
“We already know the Sauber Group with its state-of-the-art facility and experienced team from previous collaborations and are convinced that together we will form a strong team.”
Development of the power unit which consists of an electric motor, battery, control systems, and a turbocharged V6 combustion engine is already underway at Audi.
The first tests of the power unit will get underway in 2025 with the manufacturer hitting the starting grid the following year.
