Here’s everything you need to know about round two of the Super Sprint Motorsport New Zealand Championship which kicks off this weekend (January 20 to 22, 2023) at Teretonga Park Raceway in Invercargill.
Battles are set to continue in both of the mainstay Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship and Toyota 86 Championship categories with the Southern Sprint also joining the on track action, featuring rally stars Hayden Paddon and Emma Gilmour.
Racing will be televised live on Sky Sport in New Zealand and Fox Sports in Australia on both the Saturday and Sunday, with TV3 airing the Sunday afternoon race programme.
Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship
It was Austrian driver Charlie Wurz who came out on top of the points table after the first CTFROC round last week in Cromwell, but he will be looking for his first win in the series this weekend.
Sure to put up a fight is the first three race winners, Callum Hedge, James Penrose, and David Morales, who will each want to keep to their winning ways.
Testing on Friday will be followed by qualifying and a race on Saturday. There will be another qualifying session for the feature race on Sunday morning, followed by a reverse grid format race and then the main event in the afternoon, the Spirit of a Nation Trophy.
Toyota 86 Championship
One driver to watch this weekend in the Toyota 86 Championship is Brock Gilchrist who took two wins at Highlands Motorsport Park last weekend.
Rival Justin Allen will hopefully at the top of the timing charts giving those up front a run for their money as well as Christina Orr-West after her eye-catching pace during the first weekend.
Toyota 86 testing kicks off on Friday with qualifying and race one on the Saturday. Sunday will see race two commence in the morning with a third race in the afternoon.
Southern Sprint
The all-comer Southern Sprint category will feature tin-top and sports car entries including guest appearances from Paddon and Gilmour.
Paddon will get behind the wheel of a Hyundai i30 N TCR in what is a rare circuit race outing for the rally driver, while Dunedin-based Gilmour will get behind the wheel of a Mini.
