Winner of the 2022 New Zealand Formula Ford Championship Alex Crosbie has come home with the Wigram Cup after winning the opening round of the 2022/23 South Island Formula 1600 Series in Christchurch over the weekend.
The Kiwi won the cup following a 12-lap feature race at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, beating out 17 cars to the finish line.
However, fellow competitor Matthew Hamilton was the one who walked away with the round victory after winning a race and placing second twice.
Crosbie said the weekend finished on a high after he had a challenging start in the first two races.
“In the last race I was able to get amongst the front runners and knew that I had the edge. They were starting to fight a bit and I knew that I was faster than them,“ he said speaking to Motorsport New Zealand.
Earlier this month, the 15-year-old flew to Malaysia to partake in the Ferrari Driver Academy where he got behind the wheel of a Formula 4 car.
While Crosbie didn’t progress further in the Academy, he learnt a lot which clearly showed in his performance during over the weekend in Christchurch.
We next join Crosbie at round two of the 2022/23 South Island Formula 1600 Series in Timaru on Saturday 5 November.
